keyword is "fun".
Usually the first few hours or so in Monster Hunter are tediuos all hell, but i heard they rectified this pretty well in World.
First thing you always wanna do, before making a set of armor or anything, is trying out the different weapons, find the ones you're most comfortable with, and most importantly the ones you have the most fun with, and pick one or two to "main", preferably a close ranged and a long ranged weapon to fit your teams needs.
personally, I've been playing the greatsword almost exclusively since Tri , I like to roleplay as Guts for shits and giggles.
Now as for how to git gud, it's all about the patterns, think of every monster as a megaman bossfight with different patterns that you can memorize and use to your advantage.
the greatsword in particular relies alot on this in order to actually use it properly, since it's so slow you'll need to time every single hit just right or you'll end up getting your shit pushed in.
but man.
when you get the hang of it.
and predict a Zinogre's backflip before he even does it and start charging up your sword and land a level 3 super swing on him splitting his head open midair.
nothing quite like it.
