If you're racing you pump the brake and feather the gas until you hit your target launch RPM, then release the brake suddenly. This preloads the drivetrain so that it doesn't lash when you launch, otherwise that tiny bit of play in the DT gets smacked at once with 400+HP or whatever and eventually loosens or breaks things.
