For older wooden houses, every generation did (needed to do) some maintenance. Nowadays you have technological advantage people 150 years ago didn't even dreamed of. Though they had skill and knowledge what got lost.
Of course a log house is more expensive, but in my opinion it is totally worth it. Spend three weeks in a plain, preferably old log house and you will understand.
Nice idea btw, good luck with that. I did something similar. Maybe you just want to buy a hunting cabin with land instead of starting from scratch.
