Together with his father, uncles and cousins they lead their clan/kinship. Then the concept of the nuclear family was introduced. That then gave way to individualism, which gave rise to the hedonism of fruitless girlriend relationships. In a kinship group, marriage was traditionally encouraged or arranged between third and forth cousins. This coincidentally is the optimum genetics for healthy offspring. Any closer and it causes inbreeding deformity, any farther away and it introduces foreign DNA that may or may not be complimentary. My point is you need to go back in ancient history to truly understand how fucked we are and how it got this way. Girlfriend culture is by the definition degenerate, but don't think you can solve the underlying problem by replacing it with courtship rituals or some shit. Get to the root of the problem.
