It failed because it offers nothing positive to replace God. The super majority of atheists are shitty humans who, at best, embrace a YOLO attitude towards life and society and live to autistically sperg out anytime God or religion is mentioned. An even more notable number actively make life worse for everyone in their nihilistic pursuit of some abstract political or social ideal (see basically every communist ever, the Marquis De Sade, etc).
Eventually even normies get tired of dealing with them.
