I heard that recently genetics tests in Iceland showed they had a lot of Scottish blood and the common assumption is that the Norse took thralls and allies with them from Scotland but that book would imply that they just mixed with the people already there. I've also looked a bit into Saint Brendan's voyage and he basically figured out how to survive on the ocean indefinitely in a simple boat made from cow hide. A guy named Tim Severin succeeded a cross Atlantic voyage in such a boat again in the 70s.
