In the Three Body Problem trilogy, there is a point where the main character has control of a button, that when pressed will kill all humans and all the invading aliens unless the aliens promise to back off. This works and keeps the aliens from invading.
Over the next hundred years, the aliens slowly affect humanity's media to make them more peaceful and more open to contact with aliens. When the man who controls the nuke button is getting old and retiring, humanity votes in a soft and peaceful woman to take control of the nuke button, hoping it will usher in an era of peace. The very second she is handed control of the button, the aliens attack, and she is too afraid to press the "kill everyone" button, so the aliens take over.
I am interested to see if world leaders from more "might makes right" oriented nations will take advantage.
