They read comments citing statistics like 13/50 and they get a bad feeling in their stomach. It goes against their conditioning, so they assume there must be something wrong with it, but they have no idea what. As they are thinking about ways to disprove what they were confronted with, they read another comment that gives some bullshit explanation and reaffirms them that not only is their conditioned view correct, but also that the person presenting the opposing view is evil and should thus not be engaged with at all. This relieves them immensely, because it not only saves them from having to reevaluate their understanding of the topic, but also affirms that they are the good guys fighting the bad guys, without actually having to do anything or understand anything. The bad feeling in their stomach fades, as they write a comment encouraging the bullshit response that makes wild claims without evidence at all, unlike the original comment. They join the circle of likeminded dimwits, patting each other on the back, protecting themselves from having to potentially face an inconvenient truth. Once again, they managed to resolve the situation without having to face social and emotional backlash. After all, giving up intellectual independence in favor of unquestioning allegiance to your political educators is a small price to pay for social acceptance and affirmation... right?
