But I don't know if this is what it is, I think most Protestant churches traditionally and even today don't interpret Jesus and the Bible literally, the priests and pastors don't, but a lot of people who don't even go to church and freestyle their own interpretation or get their interpretation from internet echo chambers do. One of the footnotes at that quote in wikipedia references The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church pp. 779-, part of which is picrel. It says "post-Enlightenment", and according to google the Age of Enlightenment ended in 1815, so this phenomenon might be after that, whereas the Reformation, ie when Protestantism started, ended in 1648 according to google.
