A Sneed’s Seed
I am a seed on a mountaintop shelf
at Sneed’s Feed & Seed (Formerly Chuck’s).
I feel the fresh air through the screen door.
I sit in a sack next to a bag of fertilizer.
Then a gust blows me out,
I tumble and land on a bird’s back.
We lift off—I see the store shrinking below,
the faded sign, the empty parking lot.
Next day I wake in a little paper cup
on a school windowsill.
Some kid watered me,
and now I’m pushing up green.
I open my petals—bright red—
and there on the cup in crayon it says
“TULIP – Property of Sneed’s Feed & Seed.”
Formerly Chuck’s.
