On 18 October 1938, a mass assembly took place in the Festspielhaus in Salzburg, attended by Gauleiter Dr. Rainer and top officials. The President of the Salzburg Provincial Council, Springenschmid, gave a speech about the harmful influence of the clergy in politics and schools. After the assembly, a demonstration occurred in front of the Bishop's Palace, involving about 3,000 people. The crowd expressed their displeasure over the behavior of the clergy, as discussed in the speech, through whistling and jeering. When an HJ unit with a marching band appeared on the scene, the unrest intensified. Supported by numerous whistles, a deafening noise ensued. Chants like 'Sigismund, you black dog!', 'We want to see our bishop – in Dachau!' and 'Dear Bishop, be so kind, show yourself at the window!' grew louder. An HJ unit closed ranks and threatened to storm the Palace. Meanwhile, the facade of the building was illuminated by searchlights and the torches of the demonstrators. When a clergyman appeared at one of the windows, he was especially subjected to harsh insults. [...] At the beginning of the sermon, several members of the Hitler Youth entered the church, where they disturbed the service by shuffling their feet, tapping rhythmically on the pews, hissing, laughing, coughing and in other ways. When the Blessed Sacrament was shown, a car horn made noise. When the young people wanted to leave the church after the sermon had ended, a man's hat, which he had put on before leaving the church, was taken off by a priest. The young people then turned around and entered the church again, where they disturbed the service until the end with similar behavior as already described. Several stink bombs were also thrown in the church.
