I remember being in kindergarten '80 and having to do some sort of school play bullshit. Had to have a tambourine for it. (WTF?) Mom takes me to borrow one from a friend of my Dad's who was in a band with him.
On the way home, deep still spring night in the country. Looking out the car window at a field filled with thousands and thousands of lightning bugs. (I've never seen that many since.) Focus on one lone blue flash in that sea of yellow-green stars. An anomaly. I got real sad because I knew he'd never find a mate because he was different. Felt like I was that lone blue lightning bug.
Now I'm 46, and I am that lightning bug.
