>>12186863I am an aikido master but I also cross train in Bujinkan and MMA. I think it is very good for your life and health overall as well as for perception, dexterity, and balance in fighting; but for “self defense” I recommend also looking into some martial arts that are more striking based as well as “gross motor skill” grappling elements to supplement with. Aikido, wing chun, and BJJ is actually a good mix. There is nothing wrong with karate if you find a good dojo and approach it from a self defense mindset. You may also wish to consider manuals and/or training from Krav Maga or military fighting system like defendu or systema as they are focused on ending a real fight quickly.
In addition to watching videos, you should try to pantomime and follow along. However I must recommend that you find real training in any one of the arts your are interested in. There is no substitute for it.
