Because of the eclipse it'll be dark outside so your pupils will dilate. Dilated pupils take in more light which is bad when you're looking at the sun that still has some light getting around the partial eclipse.
Imagine going to the movie theater during the day and think how bright it is when you first go outside after the movie.

So unless you have melanin enriched eyes, white people should wear protective eyewear to look at the eclipse.
