The warrior cast (samuri) had honor codes and didn't really fight wars against one another in the way the foreign armies would. Everything essentially turned into a poetry/art/orgy thing in Japan for a while because they had not external pressure and internal "wars" were more political than they were actual wars.
Imagine the 1960 hippies but, for much longer and much more widespread, affecting all social classes.
Ultimately this ended eventually, but I think the artistic ability, love of beauty, and weird kinky perversions you see in japan actually come from the fact their their whole island was a big hippie love festival for ages.
