Don't think it's a western thing since I've seen I've seen people doing it in Italy, Spain and Greece but never in england.

It's just for good health reasons. Using antibacterial soap is not good for you or good for our pharmaceutical companies. Even if it is just plain soap, it is not really required and lapses of hygienic processes like that are sometimes good as it keeps your immune system educated and ready to protect you when you get heavy bombardments of dangerous alien elements.

Now if there is literal material dropping into your food or you are dropping thick sweat or grime, sure, it's worth rinsing off at least before you eat. In my family we shower at night right when we get back in from chores so there is no reason.

It's not actually, I haven't been sick since I was a kid and got mononucleosis 30 odd years ago. I think exposure to dirt and unsanitary environments helps keep your immune system fit and helps keep you protected.

Some of the sickest kids I see these days are the ones who are overly hygienic and don't get outside to play with other kids and get dirty.

To a point I mean lol. Don't just go jump in a sewer or septic tank. Lol
