It's an evil thing and the people who practiced and defended it committed performed an evil action. Plus, the US government was giving the south increasing power in the federal government. It had always been disporportionally more powerful than it should have been due to its population. The problem with the South wasn't lack of representation, it was the fact that more and more Americans lived outside the South than in it as time went on.
And yes, seceding from the Union because you're ass-blasted that you might not be able to reclaim lost political power and to protect your own economic interests to the detriment of millions of people makes you an evil traitor
