This is going to happen everywhere sooner than later. They have been cracking down on internet freedom for a while now and if there is ever a major conflict directly involving superpowers you will see the way the internet functions and is accessed fundamentally change very, very quickly.

thank god, their brand of etatist interventionism is indeed unproductive and leads to relative impoverishment. they will erode their own relevancy. the only reason they can convince (force) countries like Vanuatu to implement retarded UBO registries and KYC shit, is because they still have relevance.

the ominous thing you said about the internet, yes I've been thinking about that I'm not going to lie. the infrastructure is simply too easily co-opted by malicious state actors. It'd be cool if a sort of internet 2 using radio signals or something, easily redundant, a sort of IPFS based on various types of transmissions.

believe it or not, I'm not fully surveiled by my government. I do believe they have the ability to do so when a person of interest is found, however, they do not have the necessary resources nor legal powers to enforce total mass surveillance.
chat apps, email providers, etc are not, for example, required to store (or ask for) information such as IP, phone numbers, and ID's, and they are not required to be able to decrypt their own data on request.
this new amendment will change that. it doesnt change the de facto ability of the state to come after some specific individual, but it does vastly broaden the ability of the state to find said individuals easily and massively increase their field of view.
I've seen how these people operate, and while they are disgustingly creepy (while still somehow being useless), they are fairly toothless compared to other authorities abroad.
no matter what you say, it is clear that this is a big step in the wrong direction, and I don't plan to be around to witness the conclusion.
