The artists on Tumblr, of course not all of them, have technique down, but they're missing the knowledge about how people work to apply them to so the results are pictures that look fine technically but are missing any substance.
It's the homogenous nature of the Tumblr artstyle as well, you can't do proper expressions when you're trying to look like someone else.
