Some more basic advice: Try an earlier Wai (8 or 9), use hires fix to upscale while adding details, play around with sampler/scheduler (Euler a is usually fine, SGM Uniform tends to work well with it IME), try different resolutions depending on the pic (e.g. 1216x832 or vice versa), try artist tags. Like the other anon said, 40 steps is overkill, 20ish is usually enough (for hires fix you can also go below the recommendation from the Wai page).
