What happens if hypothetically my cousin (whom I love lots and find cool) is coming over and I being the good family member that I should be. want to lend him my gravel bike so we can do some light trails together however he is a bit overweight and I'm not sure my old bike can support this weight. I don't have an answer for you but the number one thing I'd be worried about is if there's any loose (or comparatively looser) spokes on the wheels.
"a bit" overweight should be fine for everything else I THINK.

the limits are determined by lawyers, not engineers. I don't think you have anything to worry about at 265. like, I wouldn't give it a second thought, personally.

if any spokes are wiggly, you could probably just bring them up to near the average tension but that could affect the trueness. but if they aren't wiggly I'd be surprised if he'd fuck it up. it'd take a big hit, anyway.

Cantilever brakes are basically nonexistent on new bikes and have been for a long time, but there's lots of old bikes that still have them. I don't know what a bike junkyard is but yeah you can probably find some there. I wouldn't really recommend salvaging them because brake pads do harden over time and new pads can increase the performance of your brakes by a huge amount. And they're not exactly expensive.

It'll be fine unless he rides full force into every divot and rock on the trail but that would also be a problem with someone half his weight. But you might want to swap the wheels to alloy ones if you have lightweight carbon ones because they're the most likely thing to get trashed.

thank u but all that said shoes alone are cheap as fuck my man. the only impediment is shipping time and if you have kijiji find wear part salvage rights bikes you can have braking at all for the two or three weeks until your new shoes show up

btw i still havent opened the packaging on the one(1) set of shoes i bought, i just keep them to have that shit in reserve. but any true wrencher knows that spares are important

all the different brands of vulcanizing fluid I've used (just whatever came with the patch kits, but later I bought a big jar of it) have all worked the same, for me.
black tubes are made of butyl rubber. I'm sure if you buy Michelin or Continental they'll swear theirs is better than the cheap ones but I've never had trouble with the cheap ones.

I've been riding tpu on my fast bike and I think I'm going to switch over all my bikes. they're cheap on Ali.

anon has recently successfully demonstrated that for butyl.
I've recently done it with tpu tubes and contact cement after watching a video on it. it holds much better than the little sticker patches they come with, although those usually do hold well. but I had a hole near the crease where it came folded from the factory which was opening up the sticker, but the tpu tube material patch with the contact cement is rock steady

Maybe a mistake posting this late in the thread, but the local consignment place finally got a bike that seems like it might be a viable option. Salsa Timberjack, I think an '18, pretty decent specs other than 27.5 which is probably still fine for me. Kinda beat up but the shop (which has a very good reputation locally) has been through it and tuned it up. They're asking $735 which is the top of my price range but maybe worth it. Only question is size, I'm right on that M/L line so I'll have to go back and try it and see if it feels OK. (It was 15 minutes before closing and pouring rain when I was there yesterday.) What does /n/ think?

how much of a "cyclist" do i need to be to go on group rides and not be a hindrance?

i started riding bikes daily and ive been having a lot of fun, so i joined a cycling group in my area. one of them posts of group pic from their last ride and its all carbon bikes and lycra and super aero clipless stuff

i started on a steel fixie and now ive got a cro-mo touring bike, so im sitting here in my shorts and tshirt and skateboard helmet thinking "theres no chance im going to be able to keep pace with these guys"

should i just look for a cycling group more my speed or is the gear difference not that big of a deal?

the only way I was shown was to squeeze them together as hard as possible as you work around building tension while on the stand, and also periodically put the hub on the floor and press your weight equally on the diameter of the rim and press, turn, press all the way around. repeat several times while bringing up the wheel tension. sort of similar to walking on it I guess (which I've never heard of, not that that means anything) but much more controlled.

Bigger groups tend to grade their rides for different experience levels. Group ride culture is going to be the biggest filter. Signaling, observing signals, being able to respond to obstacles in a safe manner. Just being able to not be a danger to others (or yourself) will take some practice and you don't want to be trying to learn that stuff while you're also struggling to keep up.

You may not struggle to keep up, or you might even if you are "fit". Roadie conditioning doesn't look the same as solo pleasure ride conditioning. That's why you'll see guys with a beer gut in those group rides. You can have good endurance and not be "healthy" per se, just like you can see guys at the gym who lift heavy weights even though their body looks like shit.
