Trains have the same kind of schedules as planes, except you can just walk up to it and board when it's time, instead of having to come an hour before takeoff to show some dude that you don't have knives in your shoes. High speed trains can win a lot of time over flights that way.
Also you sometimes can take your car on a train. Can't do that with a plane.
