Center turn overpass interchange (US patent 5921701)
>cringe: one intersection, with a complicated four-phase traffic signal
>based: two intersections, each with a simple two-phase traffic signal
The second intersection is elevated, and is used exclusively for left turns. It is accessed by driving up a ramp (e. g., 225 feet or 70 meters long at a slope of 8 percent). Supposedly, using simpler traffic signals is more efficient.
