I'm quite new to mountain biking so maybe I'm missing something, but 1x drivetrains seem awful to me. At first they seem great - less maintenance, simpler shifting, more aesthetically pleasing. But then you see stuff like pic related and realise how mechanically awful they are: extreme crosschaining that wears everything down at an extortionate rate, makes the chain more likely to come off and reduces efficiency to boot. Obviously if you're a professional that just rides sponsored bikes none of this really matters but for a hobbyist I don't know how anyone can look at a 1x drivetrain and think it's a good investment rather than a mechanical abomination.
