These systems have to be readjusted every year. However, it is just a turn of a set screw while one holds the wheel in the air and turns on. When it turns liquid, the setting is perfect again. That's hardly worth mentioning.
What really bothers me is that the chain never runs perfectly straight and therefore has more wear than with hub gears. Due to the gear changes, there is also unusually high wear on the gears. In addition, you can, as already mentioned, not change gears while standing. Because of this you have to drive predictively. Starting on a high gear and putting a lot of pressure on the pedals is bad for the joints in your legs.
That are the sacrifices you make for a few percent efficiency. However, hub gears have become very efficient in recent years, significantly reducing the difference.
For me, however, a hub gear is not an option because hub gears are considered uncool in my area.
An engineer makes a cost-benefit calculation. People on the board find that something suits them better, buy it, and then want to portray it as generally superior, to create the illusion that they have the best of the best which gives them a good feeling.
Fuck /n/igger.
