>>1795043interesting that you mention that because the next exit one mile west on hwy 441, they did put in roundabouts, i think a couple years before the diverging diamond improvement. same situation (highway overpassing a four lane surface road). the main difference is that highway 10 follows 441 coming from the west, but then goes south on oneida st (diverging diamond intersection) so that intersection has relatively more traffic merging/exiting from the south and west.
i don't know anything about the traffic studies or planning, but anecdotally i much prefer driving the DD intersection to the roundabouts because of how aggressively and sloppily people use the roundabouts. they seem to be designed for traffic to flow at 15-20mph when the road is at capacity but many cars can and do go 30+ thru the roundabouts in heavy traffic, which don't have great sight lines for traffic coming from the off ramps so it can be hard to merge. overall the diverging style 'feels' like it flows better, i think due to a complete absence of aggressive driving since it's 100% signal regulated and there's no merging or yielding.
overall i think both exits and the highway design overall in the fox valley is pretty good, now that the 41/441 interchange is finally finished
