Basically you have the base matrix, possible fillers (that video from Technological Connections had a great explanation about some of them), coupling agents and different treatments on the surfaces involved, such as cleaning, etching, sizing, roughening the surface, having small "hooks" for the glue to attach to, creating contact surfaces that have more area and/or can withstand the mechanical stress instead of delegating it for the glue (woodwork uses many of those), using plasma to modify the surfaces, ...
It is also being speculated as a replacement for soldering metals.
