>>1555439Ah so same thing they did with cars they're trying to do with bikes
>>1555504I see, though a few of those you have to use on older bikes too though.
>>1555536>not valid on old bikes, most use a set of screws to adjust the tension/alignmentHe's talking about the hanger not the derailleur itself, since the hanger often bends and has to be bent back using a tool that skims the rim or simply replaced if possible. A lor of older bikes don't have a removable hanger.
I've worked on a few older bikes and will say you definitely want at least a crank puller and chain breaker. Cranks can get SERIOUSLY stuck on the BBs.
Quick link pliers are totally gimmicky, but you might want a lock ring tool, as chipping at the lock ring over time with a flat head and hammer gets tiresome, the tool also allows for better control over tightness, since when you tighten the lock, the BB holder also usually moves a bit and even the slightest bit of over/under tightness can cause problems.
There are also the lock ring tools you use for the freewheel/cassettes, some can be jerry rigged, but when you get things like Old (suntour?) cassettes that need snake eye tools you may as well just buy the tool.
>with a WalMart/Canadian Tire Special you can totally do your own maint I agree though I've found buying an old easy to work on bike is much more worth it than buying a new Walmart bike. Lasts a lot longer too, though I would always swap out the old BBs with sealed BBs. I think they were called BB30s or something, you just correct the spacing for alignment, then they just thread in, then you buy a new crank and stuff and they last much longer and don't creak in the rain as much.
