However, how low do you need to go? 22x34 on a 3x is nearly spinning your cranks without moving. At that point you end up spinning out (on roots, loose dirt, etc.) because there is too much mechanical advantage. You're overthinking things if changing gears worries you and you're not racing at elite levels.
