how do you overcome the fear, /o/? i mean im more or less a shut-in but can get around via bicycle and subway, i got my license a year ago but have never driven alone

I'm in the same boat. I have my driver's license, a decent paying job for being 25 years old and my parents have said they will buy me a used car. But I just take the train everywhere because I live in Chicago and I hate driving.

i dont even live in a city, i live in bay area california with a decent public transport, not the best but can get a decent number of places. i have plenty of money and anyway i would be looking at a boring car like an early mid 2000s honda/toyota/etc. i just cant get over this fear of driving. when i ride with others in the car i always get scared they are gonna crash, i have nightmares weekly about driving and crashing

I don't own a personal automobile, but I do drive large vans on occasion as part of my job - operating a motor vehicle is not a particularly hard skill to learn, what makes it difficult is that there are many people who should not drive (inattentive, careless, emotionally unstable) and people who drive when they really shouldn't (when drunk, tired, angry, distracted, etc., or out of habit/laziness when there's a more rational optional). If you are a self-controlled person who can focus on the task of safely operating a motor vehicle when that is the most appropriate tool for a given job, then it's nothing to be afraid of. But if you are not prepared to treat driving as a task demanding your attention, feel emotionally unready, or don't absolutely need to overcome your discomfort, then you're probably better off without driving.

Like any tool, eventually your brain perceives the vehicle as an extension of your physical body, but it takes time and practice and experience for that phenomenon to occur. When it does then you don't even need to consciously think about how to make the vehicle do what you want, and if the human/vehicle integration reaches a high level, you'll even develop a very solid sense of where the wheels and outline of the vehicle is in threespace, which will allow you to maneuver the vehicle with a high degree of precision.

I'm going to have to drive sooner or later. The instructor I had a year ago even said I was a great driver and took my on the freeway and stuff. But I definitely wouldnt have any experience parallel parking or anything like that...

I take a lot of pleasure in driving because it's just like mastering another tool. I enjoy being able to eyeball a space and then using my spatial abilities to determine whether or not I can make it through. One of my biggest pleasures is driving into my garage and then having everything lined up perfectly.

But, I was in your position and waited till I was 21 to start driving and discovered a new love.

Two things made me feel better;
1. Open your windows. Coming from being a cyclist, this made me feel less isolated and more present.
2. I found a rectangle shitbox to practice on. Modern cars curve off and it can be hard to judge your space when you're used to 'being the space' on a bike.

I just can't handle the rural road where you need to judge the speed and distance of the opposite vehicles to overtake. Always hesitate or being too much of a beta. I'm usually in no rush and infact savour the countryside but it's usually the festival season when I use those roads so long lineup of cars even I get impatient.

Well if the bottleneck is usually the lorries that come out from the plantations I'm pretty much tempted to get ahead of them to the clear road ahead. That also not considering some unrestrained farm animals like cows and goats that suddenly cross the road.

So I only overtake when on the long stretches where I can see the opposite vehicles from a mile ahead. It's pretty much confidence and not always thinking about some irrational worst case scenarios all the time. This is because the journey back to my rural hometown is like 8 hours and I just want to get it over with.

I have the opposite problem. Totally okay with driving in the bay but still afraid to really get out there with my bike. I have 2 bikes now but haven't really used either of them to their capabilities.

Then you have to choose. Do you want to even TRY to have a normal life and do normal-life things, or do you want to continue living like a child the rest of your life, never be taken seriously, always be looked down upon with pity and scorn, likely never accomplish anything of real value in life, and last but not least, be alone? You have to demonstrate to people that you're capable of being a responsible adult if you expect to progress in life and be given adult responsibilities.
