I find the sequence just as important as the layout. Countries that switch from red immediately to green are assholes. Blinking green at the end of the phase seems useful, but it really it only makes people speed. Warning for upcoming red is what yellow is for.

This, going from red to green creates a short pause that allows people who just missed the green and ran the red light to not crash into cross traffic.

Ya know, I always would almost hit and get hit by this lane change or two in town and I always thought, doesnt the traffic light with more than three bulbs give a hint that somethinf funky is gonna happen, like a turn lane?

If you're turning against oncoming traffic, sure. I just realized my picture was kinda misleading btw, I had a hard time finding it. One with a left turn signal would have been clearer.

My city/county had the doghouse style traffic lights (lawful evil in OP) for years and no one had any problems with them, then they changed all of them to a new design because some study said they were too confusing. I presume someone was getting kickbacks.

It was designed this way for the colour-blind. You mostly see these in Quebec and the Maritime provinces, although they're being phased out in the former. I'm gonna miss them desu, always thought they were kinda cool in an offbeat way.

I always liked the 3M programmable visibility signals, they were developed decades ago and most cities already have or are phasing them out. Using tape, an installer could 'mask off' visibility from selected angles. That really helped at weird intersections with oblique angles (about the only places I saw them), so you wouldn't mistake another lane's signals for your own.

We actually just had these installed a few years ago by an overpass that was just built. I appreciate the idea but they're hard to see until you get basically to the stopping line and by then it could be too late.

That's why they're not used much. If you don't aim them correctly with the tape, they fade in and out too quickly. There's a video about how they do it on youtube.

I'm assuming we have the classic red, yellow, green lightstack, so why the straight green arrow? Like I said, I've only seen that once, but in that instance, it doesn't have that stack.

In Europe the additional light on the L section only gives you permission to drive with the requirement to yield.

So if the additional green light is on, with red light in main - you must yield to all other traffic.
If the additional green light is on with green in main, you have priority.

In the case of a straight arrow on the additional green light - you can go straight but have to yield if main light is red. If the main green light comes on then you have priority.

Then having the L-shape with straight arrow on the main street will give possibility for straight traffic to move (while yielding) even if the connecting street has a green light.
