Many cyclists also ride because it's fun and you can make that competitive. It doesn't changevthe fact that most cycling is done for transportating people and goods. So no problem. People talk about racing on /o/ too, right? I commute and run errands 200 km and and do fast recreational rides about 100 km per week. Some times attend some event or do tours. I do all that with same bikes. I ride in city, roads and in the wild. As many of us do.
I understand that something like competitive road cycling or gnarly mtb shredding might feel a little odd here but they're still about cycling. That's transportation. I as a non-racer (lol) also enjoy reading tips about better performance because that makes my daily riding easier and nicer.
Btw if you talk here about trains or ships or etc. as machines per se or about their aesthetics, is it fine? They have nothing to do with transportatin really. What's the fundamental core of /n/ in your opinion?
