The unusually warm February weather has got the side streets and alleys to an appalling state. Glare ice with random shallow ice ruts. Even with studded tires on my fat bike it isn't easy going. Hit one of those ruts and the tire slides off sideways. Cooler this week so the roads probably won't improve.

The main roads and paths are mostly bare pavement which isn't great with studded fat bike tires either, noisy and slow. Maybe I'll take the mountain bike out and try to avoid the glare ice spots.

I took the mountain bike with studded tires out today. The arterial roads are mostly bare pavement except where people park. Still a lot of melting going on, so the minor roads might clear up a bit before it gets colder again. Its nice being able to get in a bunch of February riding even though the roads have been wet every day.

Most of our snow melted over the past 2 weeks. This week we are in for big snow mid-week. Its been nice to get a lot of warm riding in during February which is usually our coldest month. I'm currently at an 11 day riding streak.

Even with sealant my fat bike tire is going flat overnight. Surly’s rubber compound is shit and flakes off the inside of the tire exposing the casing fibres which wear holes in tubes. Tons of tread left on the tire after 7 years & 10,000 km of winter use. Previous tire lasted about the same distance. I found a good deal on a studded 45nrth Wrathlorde tire, I haven’t had any issues with the 45nrth tire I’m using on the front wheel.

Latest flat was stranger than I originally thought. I put the pump on it yesterday to see if it could hold air long enough for a ride. But when I screwed the pump head on, the valve stem started spinning. After removing the tube I saw the stem was seated very loosely into the tube and could easily be pulled out and pushed back in. I don't think that caused the leak a month ago as I did manage to find a hole the sealant plugged.

Maybe the 2 in 1 Slime softened up the rubber, maybe a coincidence. Slime was just a one time thing to see if I could squeeze the rest of the season out of the tire. Got a replacement on the way, and a new tube.

It's more likely that happened from riding with low pressure. Sealant helps stop a leak but if you don't top off what left the tube, you might rip the valve off the tube riding with low pressure

went out on a small ride to test my new saddle and damn, I have underestimated the power of the sun, had to turn around after 10km, it got way too hot and I was only wearing merino longsleeve and jacket and thin sweatpants.
my ass was alright after those 20km, so the saddle is staying, I think.

Sealed just have an o-ring or the like between the case and the spindle to seal it, water still gets pulled in by the turning spindle but not enough to matter. If that water has an abrasive diluted in it, such as road salt, that abrasive starts grinding away the seal. Once the seal is eroded enough water and filth will get in to destroy those high performance cartridge bearings with their tiny balls and light grease. I average 2 years out of a sealed unit, generally it is in sorry shape during the second winter but I tolerate it as long as it is not noisy so I can have a fresh BB for spring.

Cup and cone use larger balls which don't care as much about a bit of filth and are packed with a good amount of a heavy grease which keeps the filth and water away from the races. In the case that enough filth gets in there that it starts affecting performance or water has washed away much of the grease, you just clean and repack. All that heavy grease will get you through most any winter.

What you can't quite see in this picture is that this BB has o-rings in the cups, so are sealed as well as most sealed BBs when combined with the sleeve. It has a bit more friction than the high performance cartridge bearings in sealed BBs but not enough for me to care about and considerably less than salt filled BB it replaced.

During the shutdown when everything was sold out and I needed a new crank, I ended up switching to an external BB, those things suck for winter, lucky to get get one winter out of them. I swung to the other fence.

Marine grease is just thicker grease, good for keeping water out but it also starts to thicken in the cold at a higher temp than standard bearing grease. Standard bearing grease starts to get noticeably thicker around -10F, you pedal harder, by -30F the grease is thick enough to make riding on level ground feel like a climbing a 10 degree grade. Marine grease shifts that by around 15 degrees, you notice it getting thicker as you approach 0F, level ground at -30 feels like a good hill climb.

Not good stuff for serious cold but good for the extreme wet and since making the grease thick also shifts the point at which the grease turns liquid and runs out of your bearings, good for the summer heat. But you are probably not going to notice the difference, normal bearing grease is designed to take the sort of heat that happens in car wheels, probably not going to manage that on a bike. Probably would help some if you are biking through the rainforest.

Feel like I am forgetting to adjust something on my bike but can't figure out what, and I feel like it is something fairly important.

Most everywhere has had to sacrifice store space and warehouse space for ebike stuff, midrange is bargin hunters so little profit and a massive selection, so it is what has to go to make space for the ebike stuff. Ebike also took a chunk of the midrange market since midrange people tend to be the sort to follow trends. In the US somafabshop is the best bet, otherwise any decent bike shop will be able to get what you want. There is plenty of it still available but you need to be able to go right to the distributor or manufacturer for much of it these days, somafabshop is the retail front for Merry Sales, one of the big distributors.

Getting into the time of year where the roads can be wet but the water freezes on contact with bike frame. My front deraileur froze up and when I tried for force it I blew out the cable housing I should have replaced a few years ago. The housing had rubbed a hole in the plastic then the wires started rusting and finally gave way. The RD housing was like that too so I replaced both.

How much do I need to bike every day to stop being obese? I've grown noticeably bigger calves than my friend who otherwise mogs me everywhere above the hips, yet my BMI remains stable at 33.

So, after a few weeks of being able to coast, still feel out of control when going down hills, and just spent a hilarious amount of time going over my drive train try to figure out what was causing the pedals to rotate when I pushed the bike backwards. It was only like 15 minutes, but that it took that long for me to remember how a freehub works gave me a laugh.

It no longer feels like it takes effort to get the pedals turning and have mostly stopped trying to mount by giving a push, hopping on and letting the pedals come to my feet. Pedals are still never where they should be though.

As soon as those rims went on, every dirtbag with a fartbox or a clapped out economy muscle car would try to 'race" me when the light turned green. Wasn't even a fast car but I guess it was the kind of car where if you wanted to make a stealth fast car, that would have been a good choice

Being faster than ebikers is 90% of my motivation to go out riding at all. I did intense interval training throughout the winter on my smart trainer just for this.
I time Strava start/stops precicely to get the largest numbers in the record. I ride a beater alloy road bike and on an actual race last year I passed many carbon fags uphill.

Last year I had the most intense Cat6 of my life. It was on my 22km commute and the race lasted about 18km. He was same age, similar bike. In the beginning there is a steep incline and I always pass each and everything on it without blinking an eye (7 in the morning you know). Passed that guy, didn't even turn around, and some moments later he flew past me again with what felt like super sonic speed. I almost crapped my pants. But he was obviously deep into anerobic on that incline so I knew he can't sustain it and I took over some kms later. This went on like this, back and forth for the rest of the ride. I think he was more powerful than me but I took a small shortcut which he missed and I was first by a tiny margin when we reached the target city. Never saw that guy again. I was scared for weeks to encounter him again.

Any of the of the steel frames from the "boutique" brands will do and there are a great many on the used market at any given time. There are lots of deals to be had with these frames and a large variety to pick from. It is a shame that Nashbar died, they were offering the same stuff as the boutique brands and even did carbon but did it without the marketing and markup.

I recently rode on a New Albion Privateer, quite nice and it would be near the top of the list for me if I was in the market, frame costs like $475.

Outside of carbon, the engineering was all sorted out ages ago, this is well traveled ground at this point. The engineering that Trek offers in a $1k bike is the engineering of the accountant and marketing firm, not to say these Treks are bad, just that for $1k you can get a barely used and heavily updated bike from one of the boutique makers that is just as well engineered as far as the frame is concerned.

Many of these boutique makers are well established. some of them have been in buisness longer than Trek. The difference between them is that Trek went into high performance and had Lance winning races on those high performance frames.

Its a "Giordano Triste" aka a Kent. I paid $248 on clearance and it was barely worth that. It was my 1st steel bike and the frame can clear 2.2 race kangz in 650b so it has that going for it. The bars and stem were good decent too I guess but so we're they are the $248 Walmart grabel bike I also own.

Wrong pic. That's my practice tube for painting. Going to paint the frame glitter metalic silver on the Walmart bike. It got some sun damage and I hated the green anyways. The Kent thing actually has decent paint on it that has held up well to UV.
