i do this too but because i am a massive pussy unwilling to drill holes in my frame. mechanical disc brakes are vastly superior to rim brakes in literally every way from maintainability to field repairability and all fairweather performance metrics inbetween and the literal only reason to not use them is lack of mounting hardware

We have fifteen brands all making the same fucking slicks, XC, Trail, Enduro, and DH tires.
It's not that complicated to have:
16" tires
20" tires

Honestly as a moto guy myself it freaks me out seeing road bikers in so little gear and on machines with so little braking power and grip. I got half my face and arm skin ripped off going over the hood of a car and face down into the asphalt at like 15mph on a bicycle when I was young and it's why I don't ride acoustic bikes anywhere near pavement and won't go anywhere near my moto without full gear on, but then I see dudes doing like 55mph downhill in nothing but spandex and a styrofoam helmet, or dudes on ebikes doing 40mph in traffic in shorts and a t-shirt, and shit feels sketchy as fuck to me.

I get all of that, but none of that is gonna make a difference if you get hit by a car or drop the bike due to some uncontrollable external factor (spilled oil on the road or whatever) and slide across asphalt and into a guardrail at high speed. I guess it's just something you live with since it's not practical to ride in moto-style gear but it still gives me the heebie jeebies.

I can't speak for everyone but I don't take corners at anything near those kinds of speeds, so oil slicks are not a major concern. I've had a couple of cases where I braked too late on a hairpin (the kind where you can see the oncoming traffic from above) and it got a little spooky but that would have entailed going into the shoulder and flying over the bars like a retard. The real problem is potholes and debris on the shoulder on the more heavily traveled roads but in those kinds of conditions I'm not going terribly fast (or I'm taking the whole lane and I can go fast enough to at least keep up with traffic if not overtake)

Motorcycles are different because you're expected to take these long sweeping curves (like on a highway cloverleaf) at extremely high speeds like a car, that doesn't really happen with road bikes.

as for braking and grip blame people who seethe about MECH DICKS REEE and insist rims are the only way to go, and similarly that if you aren't riding on perfectly smooth toroids of rubber you're not a "real" cyclist. stock ebikes tend to come with mountain bike tires and discs, if not being fatbike monstrosities with dual rotor hydraulics. in fact most "ebikes" i see still being sold are basically baja bikes with the engine removed and a motor and battery put in their place. the commuter cruiser style is a lot less popular and motorized road bikes tend to be PAS only and not very stronk

also plenty of motorcyclists just dont wear gear. dont tell me you havent seen white trash riding dirt bikes on the main road in banged up jorts and a wife beater with the only head protection being a pair of Pit Vipers that cost more than the bike

"Good technique and judgment" just means going slower for the same conditions because it's the only way to be able to stop in time. Follow that logic far enough and you're stuck in the lowest gear trundling along at 7mph so you can drag your feet on the pavement. If that's how you get your rocks off more power to you. For me it's a hard no. I'd rather just enjoy the benefits of this cutting edge product that has only been widely available for 10+ years now and be able to use the shitty technique of actually using my higher gears sometimes.

Everything is always fully predictable, flat, and open, all the time. So of course they would think it's absurd that a several feet worth of reduced stopping distance is actually a big deal.

I'll agree that hydraulic brakes are better in wet conditions than rim brakes. The difference in braking power when it's raining on my rim brake bike is noticably less. Not by enough to care but enough to take more caution. In the dry though? Shiiiiiiiii I've used mechanical rim brakes before and the difference is negligible and I'm not spending 200 dollars on aliexpress shimano hydros to find out what hydraulic pushbike brakes feel like

Also that 180 dollars could have been spent on 18 innertubes, which have a real world benefit that is immediate and not marginal like 70cm braking distance.
