Did you do anything to re-profile the edge? I suck at sharpening axes, so I have a crappy cheap axe and I've been practicing sharpening it before I buy a nice one.

No, I'm pretty much using it stock, as is.

Fiskars sells the Xsharp sharpener tool here in Europe that is specifically designed for their own products. I use that to maintain the edge of the blade. But should it fail if the blade gets too worn out, I do have an aggressive bastard file, and access to my late grandpa's old grind stone.

For those interested, per Fiskars' own words, the X-range choppers have a 30 degree cutting bevel angle.

I phrased this like a retard, let me try again.

My main point is about carrying larger belt knives. What's the point of those? Anytime I need to cut something I reach for my SAK, not my belt knife. Do you guys carry belt knives? Why chose a larger fixed blade knife over smaller a folder?

its something you don't mind being rough with & beating up
something like a swiss army knife is worsened as a whole if one thing gets fucked up, but all a larger fixed blade knife usually just needs a quick pass with a belt grinder to fix it

2.What are you doing that requires beating up a knife that can't be done better with an axe?

if you actually do shit, you're gonna quickly find out that the people who won't shut up about "taking care of tools" don't actually use them, and are just worried about resale value
and sure, its great to make sure your tools don't rust or using them only on the correct application, but some tools are made to be abused, and a full tang hunting knife is one of them
theres plenty of stuff you can do with a knife that'll fuck it up too, batoning is a classic example of this

For regular hiking and eating prepackaged food from your gas stove you don’t need one, but you should have one anyway. If you’re hunting or fishing you don’t have junk getting inside a fixed blade like a folder. Carving by the fire is much better with a scandi or convex ground blade. Light bushcraft like pot holders, skewers, tent and tarp poles and pegs, trap sets is harder with a Swiss Army knife. When they get more important is if you have to do more involved woodworking like splitting wood for a wet weather fire or an improvised splint. Obviously modern fire starters negates this somewhat, as does not going into remote areas in saturating or below freezing conditions. However a $16 4oz Mora Companion might keep YouTubers from making videos about you being buttfucked to death by bigfoot in case you fuck up in bad weather.

As the stereotypical boyscout who carried that type of knife pretty much daily for a good decade ... it's because "swiss army knves" are a meme, or a toy for children.
You can't safely do any task that requires any force with a knofe without a locking blade.

If you actually want to get real work done you need a leatherman or quality leatherman-like multitool.

Everything else would slowly give up over time at the edge. Full size scissors roll over from plstic.
As for the hook - it makes sense for them, switzerland still ties it's packages with string a lot, I hear. And the toothpick works better than wooden ones, for what it's worth. Personally I think it makes sense for an army implement - you don't want rations rotting soldiers' teeth, and in the field there isn't much room for anything better. The fire steel replacemement though - makes more sense for most outdoor users.

If you live in a relatively tame land you can get away with things. But if you live near a the woods, it's really useful.

If you're into foraging like me you'd want a good hori hori for deep taproots like chicory and dandelion
Breaking down an animal like you said is a great reason to have one.
Breaking down thicc vegetation like bamboo

It really all depends on what you're out there to do. If you're just hiking or basic camping then yea, op image is a good choice. They're just good to have on you in general.

I like the idea of the champ but I worry that its bulkiness makes it less practical. At that point, I'd more consider getting a standalone leatherman wave+ on my belt and a SAK compact in my pocket since they compliment each other well. The only big thing the two of them lack is a large blade, though a fixed blade might be what I'm looking for to fill that gap.

I agree with you for the most part about blade length and shape.
I know it’s illogical if you’re careful but I can’t get the idea that I might slip and mousetrap that fold onto my fingers. So I use something that just has the one blade about that size, maybe a touch bigger, and locks open. Being comfortable with the tool is more important to me personally than perfect utility.

I do not know how people function without one, they must just encounter situations all the time and be like "welp, now i'm fucked" whereas i can just fix stuff and do things. only thing it is missing is pliers. but when camping/exploring I just take a pair of pliers too.
