I think these days the program is a lot more pussy, back when I did mine we just go basic training then we’re essentially dropped in the bush and told to get from A to B with a compass and no established trails. I have a lot of memories of being consumed by lantana bushes and jumping fences into private property as “short cuts”. Some of the advanced hikes were almost 2 weeks long. Some kid in NSW died a years back from exposure after getting lost in the bush so they castrated the orienteering programs so I have no idea what they are like anymore.
