Just get it from a place that has a good return/exchange policy (rei, backcountry, Amazon). My personal first choice would be the inreach explorer. Besides the screen it has, I’m pretty sure you can pair it with your phone so you can use your phone’s touchscreen to navigate the menus and whatnot. I think you can still use the inreach without a monthly/yearly subscription - you just won’t have satellite communication capabilities - I could be wrong but it’s something to look in to.

It has a pretty sexy base layer map, and also usgs topo layers, and you can download offline maps, etc. The battery life isn’t completely awful unless it’s winter, and with a 15000mah rechargeable battery I can keep it running for days on end.
