Bass will typically take the fight closer to the surface, burbot swim down and feel like dead weight, northern pike make various runs, walleye are just dead weight. Bluegill and pumpkinseed like to use their lateral surface area like a planar board. Steelhead and trout make very fast runs. Bluegill, perch, and walleye nibble, bass, and northern usually take.
Through the ice, trout like headshakes, gills and seeds swim side to side a lot, perch usually pick one direction. Largemouth bass feel like a bluegill until they get about 5 feet from the hole and then they realize the situation and make one or two runs. Pike just make runs at random times. That's all the species I can really account for through the ice.
