The geothermal needs to be at a certain depth depending on your region and system. There are vertical systems too. Some small ones that use a auger and big ones that are like 3 well bore holes and go like 100+ feet deep.
The liquid is often a salty brine or some type of thermal antifreeze type of shit. Not normal water so. Frost should not matter that much. But again depends on the system you buy
