I live in the northwest corner of Oregon, in a town of about 300 and it is very nice here, people are your usual small-town busy body types but for the most part it is good-hearted, hardworking people.
Thankfully, small pockets like mine have been able to escape the caravan of Portlanders and Out-of-Staters leaving the suburbs for the countryside.
Oregon is pretty expensive to live in though, and it will probably just get worse. I think you'd be better off going towards Montana or Idaho.
