Another proper person out at that time would have walked as far away from you on the other side of the road as possible because they would have been just as wary of you as you are of them. The fact that he was seemingly trying to get close to you all alone in the middle of the street at night immediately makes his intentions suspect. Normally people try to avoid each other.
Carrying knoives in the UK is illegal or something so I suggest you carry a wrench or pipe or something you can just discard if need be and wont be as concerning as someone finding a random knife on the ground.
