While the "strong as steel" toe is a bit of marketing hype, the toe and heel are reinforced enough that you could run your foot in to something pretty hard without noticing - but I wouldn't want to drop anything too heavy on them. They'd probably take it, but it definitely doesn't take the place of a real steel toe.
The only downside is that with every day wear, they tend to break down after about eighteen months. The sole will start separating from the boot. You can hold that together for a few months with a bit of epoxy, but eventually the leather will start to crack.
The good news is that with shipping, they only run me about $100. I'm on my third pair now, and am happy with them all around.
