not sure what the fixation with large knives is. I assume it is a similar urge to that of big guns or cars.
That being said necessity is the mother of invention so within reason they would have been designed for hunting, weapons/intimidation, farming.
personally the knife I take for all my /out/ needs is a spec ops first production run, fixed blade about 8-9 in tip-tip, 440 steel. it holds its edge well I have skinned hundreds of game (deer, goat, rabbit, kangaroo, wallaby, hare) and cleaned many fish with it, cutting bait and all my camping/hiking needs and yes it is cleaned very well between tasks i.e. hunting.
the reason for me choosing this knife was pretty straight forward it was cheap and I liked the shape of the blade for cleaning and butchering and sit on the hip with out looking like crocodile dundee.
I purchased it on ebay about 5 years ago for $50 au, it has been through the wars since then but is still good to go. it has lost the black paint from its blade but that has no effect on its function.
to be honest I have become a little sentimental with it each mark on it a reminder of the adventures and places its been for the many thousands of miles travelled.
the long and short...$50 well spent
