I think with a golden shiner a flattened football shape with fins would be good enough for any fish, and shad more of a flattened tear drop shape with fins. Unless the fish are in super clear water and super picky, I would rather have something impressionstic than realistic, because I feel like fish experience the uncanny valley too.
