Free companies were hosted and fed by those they worked for. In the meantime, they had enough money to live, which was the point.
The few actual travellers that existed are all legendary, and for good reason. Most just followed different caravans, or travelled by foot with a lot of money in clement weather.
Read the stories of Ibn Battuta or Jean-Baptiste Labat if you want to learn more about travelling in ancient ages, but there isn't much to learn aside from "we got on a large boat with 10 tons of beer".
People didn't really travel without reason back then, and "leisure" was hardly a thing.
