2012 Pro-RMK 800 155" here. Love that sled.

Gear depends on the riding you're doing.
Trails? Full-face helmet with electric visor, and a heavy jacket.
Mountains? Light and breathable. MX helmet, good dual-pane goggles, and a balaclava underneath.
Jacket/pants, again, lightweight/breathable for mountains.
Also, I'd ride without a helmet before I'd ride without a tekvest and knee protection.

Brand choice depends on what you're comfortable with. Polaris, for me, is the easiest to ride. Skidoo is just awkward. The XM's are better, but I can't ride an XP to save my life. I regress 4 years when I'm on one of those.

If it's your first sled, consider what your riding buddies have too.... especially the guys with tools who know how to fix them.
