If you want a shorter read, I recommend “the Cannibal Owl” by Aaron Gwyn. I also finished Annihilation by Vandermeer which gets into science fiction, but it takes place in a rich and easy to visualize world based on the St. Mark’s wildlife refuge in Florida.
