While I'm not in the same boat as OP, I have been interested in truck camping aswel. I thought about using a truck, of course. But I think maybe the option of a larger SUV, like a 4runner, would be good incase it got TOO cold, and having the option of turning the truck on and heating up the cab space, in the event that I wouldnt have come up with another heating option.
But, I like the idea for camping, or cheap rent like OP's situation. Right now I have an s10, and its pretty small. but, OP you might want to invest in a camper to put on your bed.
