I was a software developer for fifteen years but gave it up a few years ago. I made plenty of money but it was almost impossible to be able to use my vacation time. My boss always tried to get me to sell it back to the company but I refused because (1) that cash gets taxed (2) I actually want time off to go places. The last straw was when I maxed out the amount of vacation time I could have saved up (four months) and got a vacation approved by asking for it nine months in advance... the day before I was to leave for Belize they cancelled my vacation. So instead I spent the next month maxing out my dental and health insurance and then quit. Haven't worked since. Been to four continents and have had lots of fun traveling. Eventually I'll have to go back to work somewhere which may be difficult because long work gaps scare off potential employers. Thinking about doing consulting instead. Then I could make money and just not accept jobs when I want to travel.
