do your best to keep it safe, but you can't protect it from everything. a tree could fall on it, or a rock roll on it etc.
and people fucking with it might not even kill your car, but just damage it a little. as long as it can get you home, you're OK
I've had to leave them in the bush at the end of 4wd roads where no ranger or other hiker would notice it burning, with miles to a main road. It's one of those things you get used to, like sleeping on the ground without a tent or tarp
